Challenge #31: The Definition of Happiness (sunny, chirpy, gay, glad, and blissful)
The Morning After
“Emmett, shut the fuck up,” Brian interrupted him mid story, closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose. “Do you have to be so God damn chirpy in the morning?”
“Chirpy? Is that like the gay version of perky?” Emmett asked. “Just be glad I have a sunny disposition, and we aren’t all hung over grouches like you.”
“I am not hung over; I’m recovering from a night of chemically induced blissful oblivion.”
Justin rolled his eyes as he stopped by to refill their coffee. “The bitch Anita got him again.”
“Fuck off,” Brian grumbled while Emmett laughed.
Challenge #32: Eating Out
Only in Pittsburgh
New York had five star restaurants, hole in the wall diners, coffee houses, and more ethnic restaurants than Justin could ever have imagined. When Brian was in town, they took advantage of the variety and became experts on good take out and celebrity chefs. When Justin was on his own, he searched out cheap places that didn’t care how long he sat and sketched.
New York had everything. But sharing a late breakfast with Brian one morning, Justin realized something was missing. After the waitress politely took their order and left, he looked at Brian and said, “I miss Debbie.”
Challenge #33: Crossover
Strachey Investigations
Brian let himself into Justin’s apartment only to find him sitting close to a handsome blond man.
“Hey,” Justin immediately got up and kissed him. “Brian, this is Donald Strachey, a PI I’ve hired to look into the vandalism at the gallery.
Brian nodded but remained suspicious. The guy looked more like a movie version of a PI than anyone Brian had dealt with.
“Nice to meet you,” Donald stood and offered his hand. “I usually work out of Albany, but I’m here as a favor to Justin. My husband is a big fan.”
Brian relaxed and shook his hand.
Challenge #34: Scary Movies
Poltergeist
Michael was just handing the joint back to Brian when a commercial on the television caught his attention. “Hey, isn’t that the little girl from Poltergeist? God that movie scared the shit out of me,” he continued when Brian nodded. “The clown doll and the tree. And then everyone who was in it died. Creepy,” Michael shuddered.
Brian waited until Michael was distracted then leaned in behind him. “Go into the light, Carol Anne,” he cackled.
“Jesus,” Michael jumped a foot off the floor. “You such a dick,” he bitched before shoving Brian off the couch and laughing with him.
Challenge #35: Fall/Fall Decorations
Fractures
Jennifer loved decorating for fall. Autumn colors, leaves, and pumpkins were so welcoming. She smiled as she hung the wreath outside. It was still warm out, but seeing the orange and red leaves woven into the grapevine had her thinking about Thanksgiving and nights by the fire.
She went into the house and opened the box carefully labeled “Fall Decorations.” The first thing she pulled out was a turkey plate Justin painted in second grade. She put it back and closed the box, knowing her decorating was done. Jennifer sighed and wondered if her family would ever be right again.
Challenge #36: Spooky Words (midnight, spooky, windy, scream, leaves)
Comfort
“Mama.”
“Gus?” Melanie pushed aside the papers she’d been working on. “It’s after midnight; you should be in bed.”
Gus shook his head and launched himself into Melanie’s lap. “My room is spooky. I sleep in your bed.”
Melanie realized the storm had picked up while she was working, and she tried to reassure Gus. “It’s just a little windy out so the leaves are whispering to each other.” Just then a loud clap of thunder sounded, and Melanie let out a tiny scream.
Gus tightened his arms around her, and she sighed. “All right, but don’t wake up Mommy.”
Challenge #37: Stephen Colbert
Priorities
Brian finally made it home after a marathon session to save a totally fucked up campaign. “Christ today sucked. I need a blowjob.”
“I’ll be there in a minute. The Colbert Christmas Special is on.”
Brian stormed into the living room and turned the television off. “I told you this obsession had to end once the election was over. Obama won, but fags lost. Get over it by fucking more instead of watching some queer friendly straight guy pretend to be a homophobe in order to make fun of homophobes.”
“If you insist,” Justin agreed, confident the TIVO was set.
Challenge #38: Liberty Avenue
Watching Over Justin
It took too long to park, but no matter what Justin said, Daphne couldn’t just leave him.
Standing near Woody’s, she watched the door anxiously. She thought about calling Brian, but he hadn’t taken her calls since he left the hospital. Daphne was so pissed at him, but then she thought about the way he looked at Justin while they danced, and how he sat, silently, covered in Justin’s blood.
That’s why she’d let Justin talk her into this, but she already regretted it. Then she saw him leaving with Brian, and breathing a sigh of relief, she walked away.
Challenge #39: Fire
Acceptance
Emmett lit the candles that filled the fireplace and lined the mantle. Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries graced the table elegantly. Emmett turned off the lights and was just trying to decide if he should sit or stand when the door opened.
“Happy Anniversary.”
Drew stood speechless long enough for Emmett to wonder if it was all too much. Then Drew pulled him in for a passionate kiss before whispering, “I want to make love to you in the candlelight.”
The champagne was warm and the chocolate mostly melted by the time they stopped to eat; neither of them noticed.
Challenge #40: Sentence Prompt
Useless Knowledge
This drabble needed to include or be inspired by one of two specific sentences. I’m sure you can pick the sentence out of this drabble!
Brian flicked his half-smoked cigarette onto the sidewalk.
“You know, an ordinance prohibiting expectoration on sidewalks and on the floors of public buildings, or throwing thereon tobacco in any form was introduced and passed, eight to four, in December of 1876.”
Brian grunted and kept walking, but everyone else stopped, starring at Justin.
“Expectoration?” Michael asked.
“Spitting,” Ben and Justin answered.
“Honey, we’re used to you sharing some, shall we say, unusual facts, but usually in modern English,” Emmett said.
“Pre-law midterms, I’ve been helping Daphne study.”
“Someone has to take Mel’s place,” Ted shrugged, and they all resumed walking.
Challenge #41: Justin’s Hoody
Shattered Composure
Jennifer folded the laundry with shaking hands. She really should iron it since it sat in the dryer for five days. Now that Justin was out of danger, that’s what the doctors said, but as far as Jennifer was concerned he would never be out of danger, they were enforcing regular visiting hours.
It was good, she reminded herself, to be home, to be with Molly for a few hours. Then she pulled out the next piece of clothing, an old hooded sweatshirt of Justin’s Molly kept when he moved out. She held it to her face as she sobbed.
Challenge #42: Author’s Choice
Holding On
They’d been fighting for weeks, stupid pointless fights that went nowhere, but left both of them wounded. As Justin packed for New York, they were still fighting.
At the end of his rope, Justin yelled to Brian, “You bought me a house.”
“Is that an accusation?”
“No, a reminder.”
“I meant it,” Brian said quietly.
“I know.”
“I still mean it,” Brian said coming to stand in front of Justin.
“I know,” Justin whispered as he wrapped his arms around Brian. They stood, silently holding each other, until Justin had to go. It made leaving harder, but everything else easier.
Challenge #43: Christmas Lights
Family Firsts
JR’s eyes were huge as she took in all the Christmas light displays. She cooed and clapped from her perch on Ben’s shoulders as they slowly strolled through the streets. Michael was thrilled the girls were visiting for Christmas, and he could introduce JR to the downtown Festival of Lights, his favorite holiday tradition. He’d even managed to drag Hunter along.
He might have grumbled about joining them, but Michael had caught the look of wonder on his face when he thought no one was watching him. He had a feeling this trip was a first for both his children.
Challenge #44: Crack Fic
Painful Truths
Brian ignored Justin just like he had for the last month. It was for his own good; Brian always hurt the people he loved. Justin looked pale and thin, but Brian hardened his heart against the sight of his former lover wasting away until Justin reached up, the marks on his arms suddenly visible.
“Justin,” he grabbed his wrist. “Are you hurting yourself?”
Justin flushed with shame and looked away.
“Baby, because of me?’
A single tear slid down Justin’s check as he nodded.
Tears filling his own eyes, Brian licked Justin’s scars replacing pain with pleasure. Justin hardened instantly.
Challenge #45: Blow Jobs
True Calling
The first time Emmett got down on his knees and sucked someone off, he felt liked he’d found his calling. He’d spent hours on his knees, praying and repenting, and it always seemed like a waste of time. God never had any answers for him.
But kneeling in front of Jimmy Joe Rydell, right behind the old farmer’s market, he found the answer to every question he’d been afraid to ask. He sucked and licked and swallowed like a pro, and God might as well written “Emmett you were born to suck cock” in big neon letters in the sky.
