What's the farthest away from home have you been?
Alaska or Hawaii which ever is farther. Or maybe Ireland was farther? I have no sense of those things.
Now there is something I've have been wondering about for a while, but I thought was just a product of my random insanity.
My least favorite character in the movies is Frodo. I know I'm supposed to like him but I don't. I didn't worry too much about it since I figured it was the result of a few things unique to me. For one thing, in Fellowship he looks too much like Ethan from QAF who I hate with a disturbing passion. So I blamed that for my inability to warm up to him. In general I find Frodo annoying. And once I discovered the love that is Arragorn and Legolas, he really just took screen time from them.
I was watching the Two Towers the other day and my sons' godmother was over. She is an 18yr old high school senior so I have never mentioned my slashly leanings to her. At one point she looked up and said "The more I watch these movies, the more I hate Frodo." This lead to a discussion of how she shared my desire to yell "Just die already" to Frodo several times during Return of the King. I mean, I love happy endings, but not only was I prepared for Frodo to die, I was a little disappointed when he didn't. So I realized I wasn't the only one who felt that way.
This made me think about something that has always bothered me a bit. I've watched all the extended features and Peter and Philippa are always talking about how when shaping the movies they wanted them to be Frodo-centric. They want Frodo to be the character we relate to and root for. They want him to be the focus of the story. I always felt bad that their strategy did not work at all for me. I wondered if they would see this as some sort of failure that there are people who love the movies, but feel completely differently than they intended towards Frodo. Just to clarify I think these movies are brilliant and have no criticisms of them. What I'm curious about is what their reaction would be to people like me. I'm I missing something fundamental in these films because of my complete inability to bond with Frodo? Does the fault lie with me or them that I find their "everyman" character to be rather unlikable? Would they feel that they had failed as filmmakers in some way to communicate their vision? I realize I am reading way too much into all this, but I tend to obsess over strange things like this. I just wondered what anyone else thought

This shouldn't have made LOL as much as it did. I mean not over the fact that you're repressed but the offhanded way in which you acknowledge that repression. :-)
