For once when someone says "It's not you; it's me." they actually mean it. The last few weeks have been extraordinarily bad, and as a result, I have been neglecting all of you. I am still reading for the most part, but I haven't been responding much. So if I owe you an email, didn't comment on a fic, or participate in a discussion, it's not because I'm not interested. And I really am sorry.

I am prone to hibernating when I get depressed. And while I have thought and responses in my head it seems like too much work to type them out. I've been a little better the last few days, but I don't expect that to last.

Since I need to wrap this up and one of the things I am incredibly frustrated with is the way we continue to allow our President to continue this war unchallenged by the politicians we eleceted to stop him, I am putting the lyrics to the Barenaked Ladies incredibly insightful song Fun & Games behind the cut. If only Democrats got it as well as Canadians do. If any wants me to upload, let me know.

In the Space Between Sleep and Sleeplessness )
This has been floating around my flist so I decided to see what questions [livejournal.com profile] rhiannonhero would ask me. Most of the questions are QAF related and the answers are behind the cut.

My Answers )

If you would like me to ask you 5 questions here are the rules:
1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favorite lyric to your current favorite song. Or your favorite kind of sandwich. Something random. Whatever you like.
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better. [You know me, this will probably take me a week or a month or forever. Or maybe be immediate. Depends on my current procrastination rating.]
3. You update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you ask them five questions.

Also, if you have any questions you'd like to ask me just put them in the comments. This is a fun way to get to know each other better.
In case you missed it, [livejournal.com profile] peppervl ran this amazing Viggo/Orlando fic exchange [livejournal.com profile] early_theory. I received a wonderful story "A Treasure More Precious Than Gold" from [livejournal.com profile] alilacia which really highlighted the best in fic exchanges. She wrote a story I never would have thought to ask for, but I loved every word. I had the nerve racking task of writing a story for my fabulous and most awesome beta [livejournal.com profile] phnx_rising who thankfully enjoyed the story. I also received my first banner ever from [livejournal.com profile] galor5 which I will attempt to post here. The exchange was just perfect from start to finish and I can't thank [livejournal.com profile] peppervl enough for running it.

Lit & Crit

Apr. 19th, 2007 07:58 pm
So with the [livejournal.com profile] qaf_challenges authors being revealed today, I've spent a lot of time responding to feedback and getting responses to feedback I've left. First of all I have to say how nice it is to have feedback to respond to. But I was thinking about how I respond to feedback (or how I want to but restrain myself from) and how I leave feedback when I have time. I realized what I am trying to do is have a conversation. Apparently I miss my college English classes more than I realized and have been using feedback as a replacement.

There are certain things that interest me in my own writing, but more in the stories I enjoy. I think I use feedback as a roundabout way of asking and answering these questions. Where does the idea for a story start-with a phrase, a scene, a sound? Is there an end you are trying to reach, a problem you want to solve, a mood you want to make your reader feel? When you are writing is it a story you hear or feel or see? How close to your original idea was the final story, and when do you make the changes? Does the story surprise you while you are writing? Well you get the idea.

So tell me the story of one of your stories. Answer any of the questions I asked or just tell what you think about when you remember writing it. If you can give me a link in case I somehow missed it.

Or ask me about one of my own stories. Including "What were you thinking?" I promise to answer.
This is my entry for [livejournal.com profile] qaf_challenges's What If challenge. I think this challenge had the best group of stories yet so please check them out.

Tell Me Again )
This is the story I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] qaf_challenges Hurt/Comfort Challenge. Fic wise it's a bit of a departure for me. For one thing it is much longer than anything I've ever written. I've actually had some version of this story in my head for three years. Everything from the way I wrote to how I feel about it is different from my usual writing process.

There is more angst here than you generally find in my stories. There is a lot of hurt before you get to the comfort, but you do get there. It is also AU. Although I guess it's more of an AU/Future fic combination. I changed when and how Brian and Justin meet, but tried to keep as close to canon as possible so it's not really as AU as it sounds.

As always, I welcome any feedback so if you read let me know what you think.

Title: And You’re The One Vanishing
Fandom: QAF Brian/Justin
Timeline: Begins 3 years after 513. AU in which shortly after 513 Brian goes to San Francisco where he meets Justin
Rating: PG-13
Warning: AU Brian and Justin meet post 513, but all other canon events and characters remain the same
Summary: Love can bring great joy and great pain. Sometimes it’s easier to forget the pain.
Author’s Notes: Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] zortrana for her wonderful beta work. Title taken from the Barenaked Ladies song “Vanishing.”

I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] flashfly to do the following meme:

RULES: List ten weird things/habits/little known facts about yourself. People who get tagged need to list ten weird habits/things/little known facts about themselves as well as state this rule clearly. At the end, you need to choose 10 people to be tagged and list their names. No tag backs.

On to the weird )

I'm not tagging anyone specifically, but I enjoy reading these so if you are inclined have at it.
This is the story I wrote for the [livejournal.com profile] vo_xmas exchange. If you have been there, check it out and don't miss the wonderful story The Camera [livejournal.com profile] littlegreenleaf wrote for me. It has one of the sweetest Orlandos ever!

Title: Rule The World With Love
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: None
Summary: [livejournal.com profile] vo_xmas fic written for [livejournal.com profile] me_elly who asked for I'd love a New Zealand getting together fic (done to death, I know, but I love them). Bit of angst, fluff, all the usual that comes along with that type of fic. Oh, and rimming is good!

Wish List

Dec. 7th, 2006 04:13 am
I haven't seen many of these on my friends list. I wasn't going to bother doing this, but I'm basically doing it for myself. Please feel free to skip completely.

STEP ONE
- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of about 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fun ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real possible things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post so that the holiday joy will spread.

STEP TWO
- Surf around your friends list (or friend's friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

My List )
Since Thanksgiving is over, I am officially ready to start thinking about Christmas. I love sending cards so please leave you address if you'd like one. If you don't celebrate Christmas, but would like a holiday card let me know. Comments will be screened for you privacy.
Title: Twelfth of Never
Pairing: Viggo/Orlando
Rating: NC-17
Summary: There is a place where souls can come together outside of time and space. This is where Viggo and Orlando meet.
Warnings: None
Disclaimer: I have never met Viggo Mortensen or Orlando Bloom. I have no knowledge of their personal lives or sexual preferences. This is a work of complete fiction and no money is being made from it.

Twelfth of Never )
I saw on a few journals that October is WIP Amnesty month, and today I stumbled upon this story I thought I lost. It is the beginning of what was supposed to be a much longer Drew/Emmett story I started after S4. It has been shuffled between about five different computers, and I was shocked it hadn't been deleted. I doubt I'll ever finish it since I can't imagine there is any interest. But I actually like what I wrote so far so I thought I'd go ahead and post it.

Title: I'd Live A Different Story
Pairing: QAF Drew/Emmett
Warnings: None
Rating: R
Summary: When Drew's football career ends, everything changes.
Disclamer: QAF and it's characters belong to Showtime and Cowlip. No money is made from this story.

I'd Live A Different Story )
I am listening to the new Barenaked Ladies CD "Are Me"!!!! I am very excited about this for several reasons I will now bore you with.

1. My life sucks unimaginably right now so a new CD by one of my favorite bands just what I needed.
2. I expected to get it much later since I had to preorder from the fan club for reasons explained later and their shipping policy made it sound like someone would be walking it to me from Northern Canada
3. I'm only 6 songs into it and already madly in love!
4. Once I finish the CD I have a bonus live acoustic version of the entire CD! That's why I had to preorder through the fan club. I adore acoustic versions of songs I like. My love for Erasure's acoustic CD knows no bounds and seeing it live was amazing which brings me to
5. I'm going to see the Barenaked Ladies in concert in late October. I can't wait! Again I tell you if you like their music at all and have a chance to see them in concert GO. They are fabulous and tons of fun live.

I've been thinking about writing this big post of the difference between religion and morality, but instead you get the Barenaked Ladies.

Oh the subject line is one of the song title, but I haven't gotten to it yet.
Here is the story I wrote for the Brian and Justin Dare Challenge Fic Community [livejournal.com profile] dare_challenge. If you haven't checked out the stories there you should because there are some great ones. I'm actually not too unhappy with this story especially since due to computer death I ended up writing it in one day.

Title: The World Makes Sense
Fandom: QAF Brain/Justin
Timeline: Post Season 5
Rating: PG-13
Summary: They might not be perfect, but Brian and Justin were always better together.
Author Notes:Title and lyrics taken from the Depeche Mode song Damaged People.

The World Makes Sense )
This is primarily for the non-QAF people on my friends list since the rest of you should already know about this. One of my favorite QAF authors [livejournal.com profile] bigboobedcanuck has had her first e-book published. It's called Love Match is a fabulous story of two professional tennis players who fall in love. You don't have to be a sports fan to adore this story although it is special treat for those of us who love sports and wonder about the realities of gay athletes. Seriously, this story is sexy, romantic, funny, and touching. I will be reading over and over again. So take a minute to check it out. You can buy it Here, and I promise you won't regret it.
This really just a collection of random thoughts on reading and writing I've been having. My husband took the boys out for the day yesterday so I spent most of the day reading and watching TV. One of the things I watched was The Forgotten. It's one of those movies I wanted to see, but would never go out of my way to watch. I've always found the premise interesting. Basically Julianne Moore's character Telly is in therapy to deal with the death of her son only to be told he never existed. His pictures disappear and people keep telling her she never had a son. That part of the story was well done, well acted, and really drew me in. Then they tried to explain what happened and it was such a pathetic attempt that it took most of the emotion out of the movie. I can imagine someone coming up with the basic premise and then realizing they would have to explain what did happen to her son and graping the first idea anyone had. When I was thinking about my frustration with the movie I realized it was the same frustration I have with my own writing. My stories usually start in a specific place for me. It might be a scene, maybe a line I want a character to say, or even just a feeling. What I find in rereading my stories is somewhere in getting to or from that place I started with things fall apart. There is always a place that feels rushed or forced. I have to admit it made me feel better to realize people getting paid a hell of a lot of money to write have some of the same problems I do. Not that I am excusing the flaws in my writing, but that moment of "I'm not the only one screwing this up" was comforting.

Random thought #2. I generally find the pop up letter warnings for objectionable content on TV annoying and useless. However, if the government insists on having them, I'd like to suggest one that would actually help me. I could really use a warning for violence against children. To me there is a big difference between an act of violence or death perpetuated against an adult character as opposed to a child. I've always felt this way, but certainly my discomfort with seeing children hurt has grown stronger since I've had my own child. It is too easy to imagine my sons in the character's place. Sometimes such violence is central to a story and unavoidable, but if it a show or movie I don't really care about seeing I'd rather avoid such scenes whenever possible.

And finally I was reading an author's LJ and there was a discussion about if her stories were viewed as "happily ever after" stories. She meant in a bit of a negative way more in vein of what I would call unrealistically sappy versus my definition of happy which seemed to be redefined as hopeful. But it got me thinking about what causes a story to cross that line. What is the difference between a story that is romantic but still realistic and a story that is sappy or fluffy whatever term you use. Before I go too much further, I should say that some days I enjoy a good sappy story and I'm sure I've crossed a lot of people's romantic lines with my own writing. But I thinking about this as reader and for me I have distinct personalities as a reader and a writer.

Obviously there are elements of plot, but for me it comes down to the interaction between the characters. There are the romantic gestures that don't seem to fit, rewriting the characters as excessively wealthy, the excessive crying, and of course the dialogue. There is one thing I find in the dialogue of many sappier stories that I find puzzling. Why do the characters use each other's full names so often? Admittedly my husband and I are pretty settled into the routine of married life, but there was a long stretch of time when I would have said our relationship was very romantic. In all those years he never once said to me "Juliet Allison Smith you are the love of my life and I can't imagine living without you" and I have never said to him "Richard Michael Jones everytime I look at you my heart stops beating and my life way empty until I met you." Rick has never used my full name and they only time I've ever used him was when I was mock scolding him like you do with children to get their attention. To me there is nothing romantic about being called by my full name, but I read it over and over again in fics. What am I missing? Do other people see it as being romantic or is this normal for other people. Are these authors and their lovers calling each other by the full names all the time. When you imagine someone telling you they love you, do they use your full name? Is cultural? Maybe it's perfectly normal in the south or somewhere else and I just never knew. I just don't get it.
